PRESS RELEASE
7 DECEMBER 2021
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

The Webinar on Applying Food Contact Materials Legislation organised by FTA Europe and Intergraf on 3 December 2021 has been a successful online event, with 70 people from all over Europe (and beyond) tuning in to discover the scenery in EU legislation and learn more about the Guide on Applying Food Contact Materials Legislation.

Beatrice Klose, Secretary General of FTA Europe and Intergraf welcomed participants and speakers Laetitia Reynaud (Policy Advisor of Intergraf) and Italo Vailati (Vice Director of Assografici).

Laetitia Reynaud reported on the current developments of the regulatory framework. With the adoption of the German printing ink ordinance in November 2021, Germany is allowing a 4-year transitional period which can be prolonged if the Commission comes forward with proposed rules at European level. The European Commission is currently reviewing the regulatory framework and announced it will conclude the process mid-2023 and propose a new legislation.

Italo Vailati presented the guide and emphasised its importance for food packaging printers and the entire value chain. Italo Vailati showcased the contents of the guide, and started by presenting the legal requirements on which the guidance document was based on. The significance of efficient communication along the entire value chain of printed FCM was highlighted. A thorough explanation of integral parts of the guide followed, namely the “Check list of responsibilities and actions” and the template of the Declaration of Compliance (DoC). Italo Vailati ended his presentation with a special mention to the CAST Project Guidelines, which he co-authored and have been the basis for our guide.

In the final part of the webinar, the floor was open for audience questions.

Amidst a non-harmonised legal scenery concerning Food Contact Materials (FCMs), FTA Europe and Intergraf published their joint guide earlier this year, with the aim to provide printers with a clear presentation of all applicable legal requirements and practical advice on compliance. As the topic of FCMs is of great and growing importance, there was no other choice but to organise the Webinar on Applying Food Contact Materials Legislation, in order to provide printers with all necessary information and insights on the guidance document.
